Apple Override

Overview

Apple Override is a feature that provides actionable information to Apple Business organizations and their delegated partners when Apple overrides location attributes. Maintaining accurate business information across Apple services is crucial for customer engagement and trust. Apple Override Feedback helps you ensure your listings are accurate, giving you control over your brand's location data on Apple Maps.

Understanding Apple Overrides

An Apple override occurs when Apple edits location data that was originally provided by a business owner or a partner granted Share Access through delegation or OAuth.

This can happen for various reasons, such as:

  • Customer feedback.
  • Data collected from other sources such as other data providers, websites, for example.

Attributes Subject to Overrides

Apple Override Feedback is available for the following location attributes:

  • Display Name
  • Location Status
  • Hours of Operation, including Service Hours and Special Hours

Retrieving Apple Overrides

Partners are notified of Apple overrides either through our Notifications API or webhook. Please refer to API documentation on querying for notifications or support for webhooks for API Users.

Contesting an Override

Use the Contest API to contest the Apple override. When you contest an override:

  1. You must provide an alternate value (response value) for the attribute.
  2. For attributes like Display Name, you have the option to provide supporting documentation.
  3. For Location Status, Hours of Operation, Service Hours, and Special Hours, if validations pass, your response value is published.
  4. For Display Name, additional review is required by Apple.
  5. Override state is changed to SUBMITTED.

Validation Requirements

When contesting an override, your alternate value is validated:

Timely Responses

Respond to Apple overrides promptly to ensure your business information remains accurate across Apple services. The Apple override value will remain in effect until either a user responds to the Apple override or a new Apple override is generated superseding the older Apple override.

API Integration Considerations

When integrating Apple Override Feedback into your platform:

  1. Ensure your platform can display override information to your client organizations.
  2. Provide clear options for accepting or contesting overrides.
  3. Update your stored data when overrides are accepted to avoid sending outdated information in future updates.
  4. Monitor Maps Display Notifications.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues:

  • Verify that you're using the correct override ID when responding.
  • Ensure response values meet Apple Business data requirements as specified in the validation documentation.
  • For Display Name, provide clear supporting documentation when contesting.
