Apple Business guidance for capturing a location's main address (full address or structured address)
Main Address
An Address represents a postal address of official or proprietary designation. The address's formatting should be what is expected or customary in the location's country.
An address describes a location using elements that store a house number, unit, street name, and administrative area information. An address can also be used to derive x/y coordinates for display and routing purposes.
Some locations are indescribable using an address or, in some cases, there's no conscious expectation that an address exist. These types of locations include but are not limited to:
- Bike racks
- Bridges and tunnels
- Bus, light rail, and subway stops
- City squares and monuments
- EV charging stations
- Mailboxes
- Motorway/highway rest stops
- Vending machines
Other locations possess physical attributes and/or spatial extents which disqualify them from possessing a full address:
- Airports
- Natural landscapes such as mountains, parks and lakes
- Palaces
- University campuses
General Recommendations
- When an official address exists for a location, then it should be captured unless the level of completeness would fail validations.
- When the geocoded representation of a location is non-navigable/non-routable, then a display point and one or more access points should be captured.
- When the official address is incomplete, such that it would fail validation, then a display point must be captured.
- When a location is an AOI, then:
- Display point must be captured
- Geometry should be captured
- Address may be captured if its level of completeness would not fail validations.
Change of Address
Main address MAY be updated to:
- Correct spelling errors.
- Remove a display name which is not a part of the official postal address.
- Add more precise information such as building name, floor number, unit/suite identifier, and so on.
- Provide a more complete postal address.
Main address MUST NOT be updated:
- When location has closed or has moved.
